Be Loud if You Are Proud and Louder Still if in Denial?

What is it about the Republicans who are so anti-gay?  Yet another one hit the rocks in so many different ways.  The CBS news blotter had it so nicely written:
Sacramento, Calif. (CBS/CBS13) BAD: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk.

WORSE: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk AFTER LEAVING A GAY BAR.

WORSER: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving a gay bar WITH ANOTHER MAN IN THE CAR.

WORST: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a MARRIED state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving a gay bar with another man in the car.

WORSTER: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a married, REPUBLICAN state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving a gay bar with another man in the car.

WORSTEST: CBS affiliate CBS13 reports that Roy Ashburn, a married, Republican state senator from Southern California WITH A HISTORY OF OPPOSING GAY RIGHTS was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving a gay bar with another man in the car.
This is, after all of these kinds of events, almost entirely unsurprising.  What is the explanation?  That these folks are over-compensating?  Just a bit?  Or perhaps they are seeking to drive other folks away from gay communities so that they can monopolize them?

The biggest threat to marriage and families is not gay rights or gay marriage but actually, as it turns out here, there and everywhere, married anti-gay Republicans.  On this issue, like many others, the country is moving on, while the Republicans are moving backwards.

The vast majority of younger Republicans that I know (selection bias possibly?) really don't care about Gay Marriage and a lot of the more religious right issues. There's a more libertarian streak now which is more in the mold of "keep the government out" conservatism. It is annoying to see examples of hypocrisy like the one you cite, but a few prominent cases shouldn't negate the fact that long-term polling seems to show that a new generation of conservatives seems to be moving in the right direction on this issue. Now when people start talking about 3+ people in a marriage I start to get more skeptical... but that's a different matter.
